I’ve oscillated in sharing my experiences at Helping Professionals Wellness Center for some time now. Not because I don’t hold great affection for Forrest and his team, or have I not enjoyed an amazing experience. In fact, quite the contrary is true. Assuming myself like you though, I take little enjoyment in featuring my life experiences. Unfortunately, I find it difficult in offering a meaningful review without sharing some details about myself, so here we are. My hope is that perhaps in sharing my thoughts and experiences it may assist in your quest to find the most suitable solution for you. I’ll begin with brief explanation of what led me to a point where I needed a hand. Following my completion of Army service and deployment to the Middle East I began indulging in alcohol frequently. In the beginning this seemingly was no problem, family and friends were caused no reason for alarm. Considering all things and given the time spent away, my lifestyle seemed entirely acceptable. Fast forward four years, and the picture was beginning to appear differently. My consistent late nights, self-centeredness, and little regard for my wife and family were beginning to take a toll on our marriage. I began to realize difficulty in coping with everyday life if alcohol wasn’t included. I was also fast becoming aware that I wasn’t the person that I desired to be, but abstaining from alcohol completely simply didn’t seem a possibility. At this point I wish that I could suggest through temperance, determination, and strong will I was victorious in managing the ill effects drinking was having on my life. Unfortunately this is not the case. Being arrested for driving under the influence was the catalyst that I required, allowing me to begin the process of change.

As you may know, experiencing an arrest for the first time, or perhaps any time, is unpleasant. Mind you, even with this monumental experience I wasn’t completely convinced that I had a problem. I thought to myself, I’ll jump through this hoop, treatment, and be back to my regular life drinking albeit, more responsibly. During my first meeting with Forrest I sat in his office answering some questions, and as we discussed things casually it struck me. I’m confused; I expected this to be unpleasant. I’ve exercised poor judgment and now I deserve further punishment. I thought, why isn’t this man lording over me and insisting that I have a serious problem? Why is he not treating me as though a second class citizen? Well, this paramount meeting turned out to be the beginning of my wonderful and satisfying experience with HPWC.

I’ve worked with, or perhaps better said, been served by HPWC for nearly two years. Because of this, I feel comfortable in offering what I believe at the core of what makes HPWC special. The entire staff is without question invested in treating every single person with respect, dignity, and the highest regard. For me, this relates directly to my own core values. The tone of my interactions with Forrest and the entire team allowed me to remain open minded and welcome new ideas. In my experience, the sole agenda at HPWC is simple; welcome people, provide invaluable information, and with that information assist people in analyzing and implementing positive change in their lives. So no matter what you discover about yourself and decide is needed in your life, you will have the information and support from HPWC you need to move forward. Without question, no one person is precisely the same and at HPWC they recognize this through and through from the beginning. So, with the highest regard I encourage you to give HPWC the opportunity to serve and help you through your tough times.
